Appreciation for native day butterflies

Be amazed by the delicate dancers in our Butterfly Garden, home to native butterflies. In this lush, flower-filled garden under a mesh dome, you can admire colorful butterflies fluttering all around you—especially on sunny days.

After an educational visit to our museum of insects and exhibition "The Butterfly Treasure Chamber of Lieteberg", go on a real butterfly hunt! Look for butterfly eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalises among more than 75 different plant species. Each plant is used by at least one butterfly species as a food or nectar source. Did you know that at Visitor center Lieteberg we cultivate these plants—like nettles and rue—especially for butterflies? Which ones will you spot? The Peacock butterfly, Red Admiral, Swallowtail...?

A true Butterfly Garden, not a tropical butterfly greenhouse

What makes the Lieteberg Butterfly Garden special is that it only houses native European species. That’s why the dome is made of mesh rather than glass, and the garden follows the rhythm of the seasons. It is closed in winter, allowing nature to take its course. The butterfly season runs from early May to late Septemberthe best time to see butterflies in action.

Only active in the sun

Butterflies are cold-blooded and can’t produce their own body heat. To fly, they need to warm up first by basking in the sun with their wings open. No sunshine during your visit? Don’t worry! Go on a plant safari and try to find where the butterflies and caterpillars are hiding. You might just discover a butterfly egg or chrysalis!

Generation Smoke-free

The entire Lieteberg site is subject to a legal smoking ban, both indoors and outdoors. We want young and old to enjoy nature smoke-free. Can we also count on your cooperation? This way, we protect non-smokers against health damage and set a good example to children and young people. And not to forget, our nature is also very grateful to you! Together, we work on ‘Generation Smoke-Free’.
