A visit to the BioDrome begins by leaving behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and fully immersing yourself in the stunning nature of the Hoge Kempen National Park. The immersive space offers a first glimpse of four landscape types that you will explore further throughout the exhibition, that has been fully translated into English.
Embark on an interactive journey through the forest and the stream valley to the post-industrial landscape and the heathland. The animals, plants, and fungi that live there guide you along the way. Through fun facts and engaging stories, you’ll discover how organisms live together and communicate through sound, scent, colour and shape. Do you know why moor frogs sometimes turn irresistible blue? And how beautiful they look when they do? And did you know that the common noctule can fly faster than you can cycle—even on an e-bike?

The role of humans in preserving biodiversity should not be underestimated. Thoughtful nature management helps protect rare and endangered species. On digital screens, you’ll find more background information about the conservation measures taken by nature managers in the Hoge Kempen National Park, such as opening up woodland, mowing and grazing, reducing use of pesticides, and planting in specific areas to provide food and nesting opportunities. At the same time, traces of the industrial past also contribute to the park’s unique natural environment.

Each room features a central table designed to stimulate your senses: tactile panels offer a different perspective on spores of fungi and the structures of insect wings. Magnifying glasses reveal the intricate details of nature. Using a vibrating plate and listening horn, you can both feel and hear the unique sound produced by the male lesser water boatman to attract a female. Scent elements complete the experience.

Through digital games, young nature explorers learn how plants, animals, and fungi live and work together, and how natural processes such as soil formation, water purification, and pollination continue to function properly. These processes are essential for our basic needs like food, clean air, and fresh water. Can you earn your BioDrome certificate? A fun surprise awaits! And the youngest visitors? They can go on a search for hidden ladybirds in every room.
Finally, the ‘Panorama van de Kempen’, a gigantic painting measuring no less than 33 metres long and 2 metres high, comes to life. This unique piece of heritage, painted by Charles Wellens, pays tribute to the old Kempen landscape.
