Local honey products thanks to the "Limburg Beekeeping Support Center"
The "Bestuivers, Steunpunt Bijenteelt Limburg" (Limburg Beekeeping Support Center), based at the Lieteberg Visitor Center, helps beekeepers harvest and distribute their honey more easily, with a strong focus on improving honey quality.
With support from the "provinciale plattelandsontwikkelingsprogramma Platteland Plus" (Rural development program), Lieteberg is launching a unique initiative: the Limburg Honey Cooperative*. The goal? To create a win-win for both beekeepers and consumers. Demand for locally produced honey is rising in retail and specialty stores, but high equipment costs and labor intensity make honey harvesting less appealing for many beekeepers.
Not all beekeepers harvest honey
It may sound odd, but not every beekeeper is focused on honey. Some specialize in pollination for crops or breeding bee colonies. For beginners, harvesting honey is often the most difficult part of the process. Equipment is expensive, and time-saving solutions cost even more.
That’s why Lieteberg has set up a professional honey harvesting facility available to beekeepers. The space meets strict hygiene standards and is equipped with modern tools to make harvesting easier and to ensure top quality.
Lieteberg will purchase honey from participating beekeepers at a fair price and plans to sell it locally in various product forms—such as honey cookies, pralines, and alcoholic drinks. This cooperative model creates the scale needed to meet retail demand reliably, something individual beekeepers often can’t guarantee.
A High-Quality Regional Product
This project aims to develop a product line and, over time, earn an official regional product label for Limburg honey. The scope and impact of this project are significant—it’s the first of its kind in Flanders, making it an exciting and innovative initiative.
At Lieteberg, we set the bar high. Quality is one of our core values. After all, consumers expect a top-quality product made close to home.
